Q: In FTP, where do I upload the html files?

When you log in through FTP, you are in the "home" directory of your account, it is not writable. Use it as your jumping-off point into other directories, such as:

/httpdocs - web files need to be uploaded here
/cgi-bin - perl/cgi files (these will not run from httpdocs)
/statistics - Log files
/private - offline directory for private files
/subdomains - self explanatory
/web_users - special web user directory with their own ftp access
