SPAM Filter Tutorial

[PREVIOUS STEP] [START OVER]

Training the SPAM system

Set your mail program to leave messages on the server for three days. This way, once downloaded, they will still be available in this list. You will need a library of messages for effective training.

Look through the list and mark SPAM messages by putting a checkmark in the empty box (on the right). Double check what you just did and click on the "It's SPAM" button at the top of the list. After all spam messages have been marked, go through and mark the non-spam messages and click on the "It's Not SPAM" button.

It is very important to mark both types of messages, spam and non-spam, since the system has to know which messages are allowed. Do this for several days and you will be amazed at how well it works. After processing several hundred messages, the system will become remarkably good at catching junk. Repeat this process as necessary once every few months to keep it effective and always double check for false positives.

Congratulations! You are on the way to a spam free mailbox!
